Curiosity as a Compass

Micky Goldstein’s artistic journey is defined by a profound relationship with curiosity. After years of dedicated practice, careful reflection on his creative decisions, and consideration of the outcomes of each artistic endeavor, he has reached a deep understanding: for Goldstein, creativity emerges from the courage to follow one’s innate curiosity. Each completed work strengthens his self-confidence, reflecting the growth that comes from embracing the creative process fully.

Goldstein’s art is guided by three foundational principles: imperfection, asymmetry, and aesthetics. These concepts, deeply rooted in the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which he studied many years ago, continue to shape his approach and inform the distinctive character of his work.

Imperfection – In Goldstein’s practice, true perfection is a concept that exists only in theory. Early in his career, he explored realism through academic drawing, gesture sketching, perspective studies, and more. Although aware of nature’s inherent imperfections, he initially sought to replicate it with precise fidelity, a pursuit that often led to frustration. Over time, he came to embrace the tension between natural imperfection and personal expectation, finding artistic freedom in imperfection itself.

Asymmetry – Goldstein’s work demonstrates that balance does not require symmetry. Observing nature, he learned that asymmetry can imbue a composition with vitality and authenticity. Symmetry, while orderly, can feel rigid and distant; asymmetry, by contrast, fosters a sense of life and movement within the work.

Aesthetics – Goldstein distinguishes aesthetics from beauty. While beauty is shaped by cultural and personal perceptions, aesthetics represents a form of visual order independent of emotional influence. Even seemingly random or discarded objects can exhibit a compelling aesthetic presence.

Through these guiding principles, Goldstein creates paintings that are intentionally imperfect, asymmetrical, yet profoundly rich in intrinsic aesthetics. His work reflects a continuous dialogue between curiosity and courage, resulting in pieces that resonate with both visual harmony and emotional depth. Each painting is not only a product of creative exploration but also a testament to the artist’s ongoing journey of self-discovery and artistic fulfillment.
